What is JAMB UTME?

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a standardized entrance examination used for admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. While primarily for Nigerian students, some Ghanaian students also take the JAMB UTME for admission into Nigerian universities.

Note: Ghanaian students who wish to study in Nigerian universities must register and sit for the JAMB UTME. It is conducted annually and registration is done online.

JAMB UTME 2026 Registration

JAMB UTME 2026 registration typically opens in January and closes in March. Here's how to register:

Requirements for Registration:

  • Valid email address (active and accessible)
  • National Identification Number (NIN) — required for all candidates
  • Phone number (for OTP verification)
  • Passport photograph (white background, not older than 6 months)
  • Waec/NECO result or awaiting result
  • Registration fee: Approximately ₦3,500 – ₦5,000 (plus service charge)

Step-by-Step Registration:

  1. Visit the official JAMB portal: www.jamb.gov.ng or www.jamb.org.ng
  2. Click on "UTME Registration" and create an account with your email
  3. Fill in your personal details — name, date of birth, state of origin, etc.
  4. Enter your NIN number and verify your identity
  5. Select your examination town and language (English is mandatory)
  6. Choose your preferred examination center
  7. Upload your passport photograph (meet the specifications: 2"x2", white background, JPEG)
  8. Review all details carefully and submit
  9. Print your registration confirmation slip
  10. Keep your JAMB registration number — you'll need it for the exam and to check your result

Important: Your JAMB UTME score is valid for only one admission year. If you don't get admitted, you'll need to resit the exam the following year.

Minimum JAMB Score for Nigerian Universities

The minimum JAMB UTME score for admission varies by university and course. Generally:

  • Medicine & Surgery: 280 – 350 (out of 400)
  • Law: 260 – 320
  • Engineering: 220 – 280
  • Business Administration: 180 – 220
  • Arts/Humanities: 160 – 200

Ghanaian Students in Nigerian Universities

Many Ghanaian students attend Nigerian universities, particularly for courses like Medicine, Engineering, and Law, which may have higher cut-offs in Ghana. To apply:

  2. Apply through JAMB's Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS)
  3. Choose your preferred Nigerian university as your first or second choice
  4. Participate in the university post-UTME screening exercise
