About WAEC / WASSCE

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is a standardized test taken by senior high school students in Ghana (and other West African countries) at the end of their secondary education. It is administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and is the primary qualification for university admission in Ghana.

How to Register for WAEC 2026

WAEC registration in Ghana is done through your school (for school candidates) or directly with WAEC (for private candidates). Follow these steps:

For School Candidates:

  1. Your school will provide registration forms at the beginning of the academic year
  2. Fill in your personal details, subject choices, and bio-data carefully
  3. Pay the registration fee (varies by school, approximately GHS 500 – GHS 1,200)
  4. Submit your passport-sized photographs (white background) and ID card
  5. Collect your examination entry form from your school before the exam

For Private Candidates:

  1. Visit any WAEC regional office in Ghana or use the online registration portal
  2. Fill in the private candidate registration form
  3. Provide your Ghana Card (National ID) or Passport
  4. Upload your passport-sized photograph (white background, max 50KB)
  5. Select your examination subjects and enter your previous WASSCE index number if applicable
  6. Pay the registration fee at the bank or via mobile money
  7. Collect your entry form from the WAEC office after 48 hours

How to Check WAEC Results

WAEC results are released approximately 6-8 weeks after the last paper. Follow these steps to check your WASSCE results:

  1. Visit the official WAEC result checker: www.waecgh.org
  2. Click on "Results" and select "WASSCE" or "Private Candidate"
  3. Enter your Index Number and select the examination year and month
  4. Enter the Serial Number found on your entry form
  5. Enter the Personal Identification Number (PIN) from your result checker card
  6. Click "Submit" to view your results

WAEC Minimum Requirements for University Admission

To qualify for university admission in Ghana, you typically need:

  • A minimum of credits (C6 or better) in at least 6 subjects including English Language and Mathematics for most programs
  • For Science courses: Credits in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics
  • For Business courses: Credits in Mathematics, English, and relevant business subjects
  • For Arts courses: Credits in English and at least one language subject

Tips to Pass WAEC 2026

  • Start early: Don't wait until the last minute. Begin preparations at least 6 months before the exam
  • Use the syllabus: It tells you exactly what WAEC expects from you
  • Practice past questions: This is the single most effective way to pass. Do at least 10 years of past questions
  • Understand the grading: Know how marks are allocated and focus on high-yield topics
  • Time management: Practice completing papers within the allocated time
  • Don't cheat: WAEC has strict anti-cheating measures. Candidates caught are banned for multiple years
