About NECO

The National Examination Council (NECO) is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). While primarily Nigerian, NECO exams are also recognized in some Ghanaian institutions and by students who need an alternative to WAEC.

Important: In Ghana, WAEC is the primary exam body recognized by Ghanaian universities. NECO is more commonly used by students seeking admission to Nigerian universities or those who need a second chance at certification.

NECO Exam Types

  • Internal SSCE: For school candidates — conducted in Nigeria
  • External SSCE (Private Candidates): For private candidates — conducted in Nigeria and designated centers abroad
  • NECO GCE: General Certificate of Education — for private candidates, usually held in November/December
